Friday! Friday! Friday

Friday.

When I was younger (“so much younger than today”), Tuesday was new release day. It was a holy day, a blessed day, filled with roaring guitars, hammering drums, and the dulcet prayer tones of Fred Durst. Yes, I bought Chocolate Starfish & The Hot Dog Flavored Water on CD. Long live Limp Bizkit!

Tuesday, after school, I’d saunter on down to the local music store, and pick up CD’s of my favorite bands. I couldn’t wait to get them home and annoy my family with whatever glorious musical concoction I had conjured up in the hallowed rows of Angelo’s Music.

Angelo’s has long gone now, and so are the days of Tuesday releases. Let’s see if some of you can guess from the title of today’s email as to what the NEW release day is?

If you guessed Friday, stop by the podium on the way out for a free pen because YOU are the big winner.

If you’re releasing new music this year, release it on Friday. Not Thursday, not Saturday… FRIDAY.

He's Still Yelling About Friday.

FRIDAY is when new releases happen. Playlist editors are paying attention. Music supervisors are paying attention. It’s the first step in a release push over the weekend. Part of the game is a release campaign where you’re trying to trigger algorithms to work for your music. And that starts on… you guessed it… FRIDAY!

If you’re seeking a record label, releasing music the RIGHT way lets people know that you are here to play the game. If you’re looking to maintain your independence, it’s indicative to potential partners & team members that you’re not f*cking around, and this is your career. You’re not waiting for someone to come find you, you’re gonna make sure you’re heard.

You have to learn to play the game of the NEW music business. And three basic rules are this.

  1. Always be writing & recording.

  2. Release new music, videos, etc, every 6-8 weeks.

  3. Always release on Fridays.

Unless you’re Limp Bizkit. Then you can do whatever you want.
